Local students see real benefits from their environmental hard work

11 Local schools in the Blayney area have benefitted from the Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations (CVO) Enviro Smart Grants, including Mandurama and Neville School. The grants, each valuing $500, are for schools to help implement environmental projects and educate students about the importance of responsible environmental management. The grants aid schools in teaching students simple tasks such as recycling classroom water, and creating schoolyard composts. The students are encouraged to be aware of the wider environment in their community and how other organisations responsibly  manage their environmental impacts.

Tony McPaul, CVO General Manager said that the EnviroSmart awards program is intended to increase student awareness of the importance of responsible environmental management, and to recognise schools environmental excellence.

“Teaching students how to compost, plant trees and identify weeds will provide them with lifelong skills that will not only benefit them, but their surrounding local communities,” Mr McPaul said.

“As an industry we work hard to minimise our environmental impacts and through the EnviroSmart program, we are encouraging students and schools to innovate and do the same in their own schoolyards.” CVO has awarded more than 90 EnviroSmart grants and $45,000 in funding to assist local schools since 2006.
